Modderfontein Golf Club

Course History

Surrounded by the suburbs of Edenvale, Kempton Park and Alexandria, Modderfontein Golf Club was founded in 1935 by the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory and nestles in a valley which is bisected by the Modder River. Designed by Arthur Tomsett, the course was officially opened by Bobby Locke. At one time the estate was home to AECI, a munitions and chemicals manufacturer that supplied various South African industries. Nowadays it contains private housing and office developments.

Modderfontein had always been a great test of golf, but in 1990, along with substantial investment, the course was upgraded and redesigned by the wonderful South African touring professional, Hugh Baiocchi, who along with his father Johnny, have had a connection with this great venue for many years. This led to the reconstruction, shaping and contouring of USGA Spec Bentgrass greens which require intelligent reading skills and a solid putting stroke. Tree-lined fairways with bands of kikuyu semi and fescue rough, demand accurate driving in order to avoid strategically placed fairway bunkers. The par fives can be reached in two, but sometimes a safer three shot route to the green is desirable. The par fours require different shapes of shot and good thinking. Approach shots have to be hit crisply and with authority to find well guarded, perfectly manicured putting surfaces. The four par threes require accurate tee shots into well-bunkered greens with water coming into play.

Abundant and colourful birdlife inhabit this picturesque layout and a huge variety of indigenous trees, shrubbery and wild flowers will make your walk around this fine golf course an absolute pleasure!

The pretty, functional clubhouse offers stunning views of the golf course and creates the ideal setting for a perfect 19th hole! Excellent bar, restaurant and conference facilities are serviced by a helpful, friendly staff whose South African hospitality puts the cherry on top of a great days' golf in fabulous surroundings.
